We believe that every group doing social and environmentally beneficial work has a compelling story to tell. Communicating that value, however, can be extremely difficult. As demands for accountability and transparency are growing, we want to ensure that evaluations enable good work, not hinder it.

We take seriously the challenges facing socially-based organizations and work hard to help communicate value by means most appropriate to a given project. That means understanding the unique context in which ground-level work happens and focusing on metrics that measure effectiveness within that project. "Cross-cutting metrics" and ranking systems often force organizations to value themselves in ways that are not true to their work. We understand that and believe that funders, investors, internal management and others who request metrics will indeed be better off by evaluating an organization's work empirically. We do understand the needs of those requesting information, however, and ensure that any evaluation efforts on behalf of organizations are communicated in a way that suits their needs as well. They are actionable and increase the value of the organization rather than take up resources.

By working together to create a language of communication-a system of social accounting-we can help all those involved work together, innovate and do the best work possible.
